Is Toronto Turning a Corner?

Coming into the season, Toronto’s problems were obvious. They had nine new faces, a franchise player looking for reasons to stay, did not look scary defensively and had an inexperienced head coach. There were also concerns that their big free agent acquisition, Hedo Turkoglu, would not mesh well with their current PG, Jose Calderon. Up until a few weeks ago, most of these issues were still seen as problems. Toronto was one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA, the rotation had yet to be defined and many were pointing fingers at the likely target, Coach Jay Triano. What was worse is there were rumours that there was a cultural divide in the Raptors locker room between the North American players and the Europeans. Apparently, due to lack of familiarity with their teammates and cultural differences, some players were afraid to call out others for their defensive mistakes and communicate with each other on the floor. The team called a meeting to air out any lingering concerns and address the issue and since then it has not appeared to be a problem. This meeting played a big part in bringing this team together, however, they still seemed to struggle a little and still appeared to be soft defensively.

The McGrady Myth

Tracy McGrady can’t seem to get a break. After rehabbing his way back from a serious knee injury, he returned to find his team no longer requires his services. Initially Coach Rick Adelman attempted to bring him along slowly in limited minutes, but when T-Mac felt he was healthy enough for more, the coach wouldn’t budge. The Rockets had moved on and were winning games with his younger replacement Trevor Ariza now leading the way and wearing McGrady’s old #1. McGrady and the team agreed that he could stay home until the Rockets can find a trading partner and now it is a waiting game with the Rockets not getting a lot of offers from potential suitors. This rasises the question, why does nobody want McGrady? He is a multiple time all-star and seems to be fully healthy, however, he carries with him the stigma of losing. McGrady has never been past the first round of the NBA play-offs and due to his superstar status and his contract (highest paid player in the league), the weight of the blame has always fell on him. However, looking back, does he really deserve it?
